View of Tomonoura Painted in Excel [Limited Edition]

A Pixel Wonderland

Fukuzenji is a small Buddhist temple that overlooks the bay of Tomonoura in Hiroshima. Inside the temple is a tatami mat room known as Taichourou which is famous for its picturesque views of the Seto Inland Sea. A small pagoda can be seen perched atop Bentenjima island and behind it is the larger Sensuijima. Their green hills are surrounded by misty clouds and the calm waters of the inland sea.

The location is also known as  the setting for the popular Studio Ghibli film “Ponyo on the Cliff.”

The landscape was painted in Microsoft Excel by artist Tatsuo Horiuchi, who added the cherry blossoms in the corner out of his own will, creating a most idyllic scene.

Meet the artist: “I never used Excel at work but I saw other people making pretty graphs and thought, ‘I could probably draw with that,’” says 76-year old Tatsuo Horiuchi. About 14 years ago, shortly before retiring, Horiuchi decide he needed a new challenge in his life. So he bought a computer and began experimenting with Excel. “Graphics software is expensive but Excel comes pre-installed in most computers,” explained Horiuchi. “And it has more functions and is easier to use than Microsoft Paint.”
