Kami no Tsubo: Paper Vase
Turn any plastic bottle into a gorgeous vase
Plastic bottles are ubiquitous in our day-to-day lives. So instead of throwing them out, why not extend their lives by transforming them into beautiful vases? Kami no tsubo (literally, paper vase) is a flat-pack sheet with narrow slits, allowing it to bulge into a 3-dimensional shape.
Plastic bottles come in all shapes and size and the Paper Vase will adapt a unique form depending on the bottle. Experiment with different shapes and sizes to create chubby or skinny vases!
The unique system of turning 2-dimensional objects into 3-demnsional forms using narrow slits is the brainchild of designer Hiroshi Kajimoto, who got the idea when he was eating ika somen, or squid sashimi that is cut into fine strips. He was the first to coin the technique as ISS (Ika Somen System).
