A natural-dyed noren room divider handcrafted by textile designer Toyokazu Ono of Yotsume Dye Studio. Based in southern Japan, Ono specializes in katazome, a traditional and labor-intensive process of dying that involves a single stencil made from Japanese paper, rice paste to resist dye and multiple steps of drying, immersing and brushing on the natural pigment.
This motif is inspired by the ajisai, or hydrangea, a symbol of the rainy season in Japan. The hues of the leaves and petals were dyed just so that they would replicate the deep blues of a hydrangea plant soaked from a rain shower.

Yotsume Dye Studio was established in 2015 by textile designer Toyokazu Ono, who decided to carry on a family legacy that began around the turn of the 20th century creating dyed textiles for temples, shrines and schools. Ono combines his expertise in graphic design with a highly traditional approach to the dying process, and an unwavering dedication to all-natural materials. The results are unique, one-of-a-kind textiles that continue to keep the flame of tradition alive.
